This modern Mill Valley landscape is comprised of several concrete planters and walls, framed by warm tones of cedar fencing, arbors and an overhead structure that provides wind protection, when sitting in front of the firepit. My planting plan design provides a variety of plants with leaf textures, patterns and colors tieing it all together, while softening and enhacing the hardscape materials. These photos were taken just one month after planting. More photos will be uploaded as the garden flourishes.
Planting Plan Design by Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design, San Anselmo, CA. In collaboration with Architect Barry Peterson, Studio 300a in Sausaltio, CA who was responsible for the exquisite and detailed hardscape design and theme.
The plant palette includes a variety of plants that withstand the often harsh winds and cool weather that is prevelant in this area of Marin County. I chose several plants from South Africa and Australia, along with some California Natives that can stand up to these conditions, and are ideal for our Bay Area Mediterranean climate. They include the beautiful Agonis flexuosa 'Jervis Bay After Dark', a beautiful peppermint tree with deep burgundy, almost black foliage. Leucadendron 'Safari Sunset', Thamnochortus insignis - thatching reed, Lomandra 'Breeze' for its green foliage and adaptibility to sun and shade, and a non-invasive ice plant with lovely white flowers and succulent green foliage that cascades down the concrete walls and casts shadows. Against the fence I included the graceful Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster', feather grass that sways with elegance in the breeze. Cordyline 'Festival Grass' provides a perfect contrast againt the concrete walls with its bold burgundy foliage, and is accented by the lime green tones of Sedum 'Angelina'.
