MODERN WATER-SIDE LANDSCAPE TRANSFORMATION - LAWN REPLACED WITH LOW WATER PLANTINGS AND OTHER BEAUTIFUL UPDATES.
BEL MARIN KEYS, NOVATO, CA - BACK
Entertaining and enjoying the spectacular water-side views were a primary design goal for this project, in addition to replacing the lawn with low-water plantings. I specified a new deck with built-in benches and large architectural planters. The homeowner chose Cumaru wood, a hard wood similar to Ipe. The modern concrete steps and pavers are accented with black polished Mexican pebbles. I included a sunken patio on one side and a Buddha statue focal point on the other, surrounded by succulents and other low-water, contemporary plantings. I specified Dymondia ground cover to create natural pathways within the garden. This project was just completed early Feb. 2014.
The plant palette includes a variety of site appropriate plants that can stand up to hot summer sun, drought and gusty winds. I chose a variety of CA Natives and those from other Mediterranean climates for year-round interest, textures and colors. All plants are drought tolerant and include Blue Oat Grass, Bulbine, Euphorbia, Succulents, Leucadendron, Lavender, Salvias and Lion's Tail to name a few.
